Tata Punch Sales Performance: A Brief Recap

Launched in 2021, the Tata Punch has been one of the brand’s strongest performers. In 2024, it made history by becoming India’s highest-selling car, marking the first time in over four decades that a non-Maruti model topped the sales charts.

However, in 2025, the Punch slipped to the 10th position in overall sales. Addressing concerns, Tata Motors MD and CEO Shailesh Chandra clarified that the decline was driven by temporary market conditions rather than a loss of demand.

“I don’t see this as a drop, mainly because of two large factors,” Chandra told Autocar India.

According to him, pressure on the entry-level car segment due to a slowing economy and prolonged anticipation around the Punch facelift led many buyers to postpone purchases. Despite these challenges, Tata Motors retailed around 1.85 lakh units, underlining the model’s sustained appeal.

With these hurdles now addressed, Chandra is confident that Punch sales will start hitting the next peak.

2026 Tata Punch Facelift: Key Sales Growth Drivers

Tata Motors expects the facelifted Punch to see incremental growth from new powertrain options and higher-spec variants.

Turbo-Petrol and CNG-AMT to Boost Volumes

  • The naturally aspirated petrol Punch will continue to be the primary volume driver.
  • The new turbo-petrol Punch, borrowed from the Nexon, targets buyers seeking a more powerful and spirited small SUV.
  • The CNG range, which currently contributes 35% of Punch sales, is expected to grow further with the introduction of an AMT (automatic) gearbox.

While Punch CNG sales have traditionally been dominated by lower-spec variants, Tata Motors expects higher trims and automatic versions to account for a sizeable portion of future sales.

Notably, CNG models contributed 28% of Tata Motors’ total sales last year, highlighting the fuel type’s increasing importance.
